Tasks

  • What makes an institution Research I and what are implications? (eg. faculty recruitment)

The category 'Research I' is a reference to the amount of Federal funding granted to a doctorate-granting institution according to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching prior to 2000. Changes in categorization in 2005 has made the term obsolete, though it is still used in reference to universities with the largest research budgets, often by the institutions themselves in promotional materials.

Western Michigan University is now categorized as a Research University with high research activity (RU/H), but not very high research activity (RU/VH). The further classifications of WMU can be found here

What the Carnegie Foundation calls 'similar institutions' to WMU include Florida International, George Mason, Georgia State, New Mexico State, Texas Tech, University of Oregon, University of Toledo, and University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

Further information can be found at the Carnegie Foundation website.

On WMU's website they do mention student research in this pat on the back "welcome to the Office of the Vice President for Research" page, so it apparently means something to them... "Research projects for faculty and students range from scholarly works on the Medieval era to applied use of biopolymers as barrier coatings in packaging applications. In 2005-2006 FY, more than $39 million in external funding dollars were received through OVPR. Furthermore, faculty and students published more that 700 refereed journal articles and 77 books, and juried more than 700 performances, in that same year." (my emphasis) The research page has lots of interesting links. For more info go to http://www.wmich.edu/research/

Also check out the "Fact Sheet" link on this page for some great 2005/2006 stats on the University http://www.wmich.edu/ir/fb05/index.htm#
